An imperfect science
From paper size to book size
While many antiquarian books may have originated from standard paper sizes, most have undergone multiple edge trimmings over time, and their boards were often custom-fitted. Add to this the natural variation in thickness, and it becomes clear that no two books are exactly alike. As a result, the height and width dimensions we reference represent an average for each book size category.
Although there are reliable book sizing charts available online, the terminology and exact measurements can vary from source to source.
The STILT Sizing System
At STILT, we’ve developed our own sizing chart, informed by several established references. These measurements are built into our product design to reflect a balanced ratio between typical book dimensions and support requirements — ensuring a practical, well-fitting solution for a wide range of volumes.
We use a wrap-around measure to measure width. This ensures optimal book support from left to right, regardless of the thickness to board width ratio of your book.
How to choose your Cradle size
Measure height , head to tail in cm’s or inches.
Measure wrap-around distance: back board width + spine thickness + front board width.
Tip: use a string to wrap around the book and then set the string against a ruler or tape measure.
If your book’s measurement exceeds our height OR wrap-around recommendation, we suggest selecting the next size up.
Book Weight
Our weight guidelines are designed to ensure optimal performance when using Cradles with accessories. However, the stand-alone Cradles themselves can safely support a significantly higher distributed weight. If you’re working with a particularly heavy volume, please contact us for advice.

Unusual Sizes
For oblong books, an off-the-shelf solution is to choose for a Cradle that is one size larger.
For precision sizing of book sizes that do not fall within our sizing we can produce a bespoke Cradle to fit your needs. Please contact us to discuss your options.
