The Collector of Collectors

What is a book support without a book? And what is a book without the person who chose it? An evolving record of the collectors we meet and the books they open with us.

Marcel Duchamp

A Portable Retrospective in Photographs

Autograph-Indexed Notebook of Duchamp's Work (c. 1950)

In a small ledger, on lined accountant's paper, Duchamp pasted photographs of his own work and labeled each one in his own hand:

Broyeuse de chocolat, 1914.

Moulin à café, 1911.

Porte Bouteilles Ready Made, 1914.

“The title of a painting is another color on the artist’s palate.”

– Marcel Duchamp

Le Tignet (Alpes-Maritimes) c. 1950.

as written in Duchamp’s hand on the front free endpaper: “Duchamp / Le Tignet parnasse / Alpes-Maritimes”. Octavo notebook (approx. 22 × 17 cm), with original paper boards and black-taped spine; custom box.

“I love how intimate this album is. Duchamp is proudly displaying his life's work and writing his own captions. It feels homemade and deeply personal. When I'm looking at it, I feel close to him and his art – like I'm a part of his inner circle and he's showing his work only to me.”
